Robert: Preferred anything (height, size, width, etc.) is just that. It's what the component would like. It's up to the individual layout manager to determine the actual size of a component in a container. For example, the preferred size of a button is based upon it's text. Placing a button with "OK" as it's text into the center of a BorderLayout demonstrates the regard for preferredSize BorderLayout has. FlowLayout, on the other hand, is happy to accomodate the preferred setting of the button (but this, of course, makes it impossible to increase the size of the button without increasing the length of the text). -Rich Robert Lintonbon wrote: > > I can not get 'setPreferredHeight(int)' to have any effect on a > fieldControl -should it vary the field's height or is there another method > to adjust the height?
