Hi there, I'm wondering if an idea I've had can be implemented with Java. I want to get some feedback from yourselves before I go too far in proceeding. I've completed a client/server application using Java and have gone through considerable pains to try to make the server side app run on Linux. As it stands now, in order to run the server app, I have to log in as "root", keep my session open, and use the java command to run the application. While it is running, I have set it up so that in order to shut it down, you can type "stop" at the prompt. This is great, however, now I'd like to take things a step further. I'd like to be able to run the application automatically when the computer is booted up so that I don't have to log in and keep a session open in order to run it. If I was to pull this off, this would present the dilemma of shutting it off when ever I wanted. Then I got the bright idea...why not encorporate a threaded class as part of the server app that has another ServerSocket object in it set to listen only to the loopback address (127.0.0.1). Then include with the program one additional class with its own main() method and a Socket object, which I can use to execute solely for the purposes to communicating with the running server app and tell it to shut down. That would work, wouldn't it? For those of you who are Linux savy, maybe you see some problems with this? I'd like to hear any comments you may have. Alan
