Hello.
Is there anyway of opening Microsoft Outlook E-mails from within a Java
Application. I have developed a CRM program and would like to integrate
e-mail. I am able to send/read e-mails using IP*Works beans & can shell to
Outlook using:
Runtime load = Runtime.getRuntime();
load.exec("c:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office\\Outlook.exe");
but cannot open native Outlook mails.
Regards.
Ted

If you want to trigger the "send e-mail" function, you can do so with:
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd /c start mailto:user@domain.com");
Note that this is Windows-specific.
If you want to have full access to the Outlook API, I have been unable to
find any libraries that will do what you want. The closest thing I've found
is this:

I'm just thinking out loud here, you should be able to find some Outlook ocx
control and make JINI calls to it to be able to get control over Outlook.
I'm just thinking what I would do from my VB days, and I would reference an
Outlook OCX/control and then use it like another native object.
Hope it helps (or at least fuels the fire for thoughts? :>), good luck.

Rather than drive an end-user mail client from your program, you should be talking directly to your exchange (or other mail) server. The best way to do this is to use the JavaMail API. Exchange has an IMAP and a POP connector available, so you can choose either one. POP is better if you want to use your application as the mail store (you download the messages from the exchange server and delete them from there). If you simply want to peek at the messages but leave them there, you would be better off using IMAP, though POP3 can be used for that, too (just leave the messages on the server after you're done). To send mail, use the JavaMail API to create a message (it can create MIME messages with attachments and all that jazz), and send it using SMTP by connecting to the SMTP connector of your Exchange server (or other SMTP server like sendmail or qmail). In both cases, you're using pure Java code with no native dependencies.
