Exit codes, values?

I've written a simple Java application that retrieves a URL that is passed
on the command-line. I would like the Java app to return a status to the
calling program (UNIX shell), something like an exit code or return value.
Is there an easy way to do this? I just want to be able to notify the
calling program whether the URL was successfully retrieved or not.
