Hi Blake,
   This message is coming to you almost two months later, but there is
a specific answer to your question.
   By some strange coincidence I bought a book today that has the
spec you need: "Portable Document Format Reference Manual" published
by Adobe Systems.  It contains sufficient detail to generate .pdf
files.  Once you have generated a .pdf file it is probably a good
idea to use Adobe's reader product to do the printing.  I have not
tried with Java, but the posted messages suggest I shoud wait!
  I only started to read the book this afternoon, so I can't say
how well it works yet, but look me up in a few weeks if you
are still interested.
