at the rate that the JDk keeps changing it makes it hard for browser
companies to keep up. Microsoft is probably not even working on making it
compatible with the correct jdk since they sort of made their own version.
Netscape just bearly got 1.1.4 out but now Sun has 1.2.x. My real question
is to run any java applet on the web, are we limited to the capability of
the browsers. I mean of no browser keep up with the changes, does that mean
that any applet i create wont be able to run? Are their any alternative to
running an applet over the internet with out worring about the browser that
you have. I know that Sun put out Activator, so that may be an alternative.
It funny becuase there really is only two companies that make industry
browsers for windows system. That sort of makes it very limited. I read an
article that Microsoft is concentrating more on DHTML and scripting like
ISAPI for internet/intranet developement. Microsoft doesnt see any
advantages on using Java. I kind of understand their point, especially
about not browsers not being up to date on the Sun version of the jdk.
Also, I see a string capability of Java in the intranet market, but as far
as the internet market to dependent on the browser, causes a problem.
Second people dont even believe the hipe anymore about write once run
anywhere. Also, how many OS are there really. I work in a company that has
more than 4000 PC's and 95% are windows and 5% HP9000 servers. Aside from
unix only windows dominates the market. Apple, well they may not even exist
soon. I like java for its ease but not really looking at it from the stand
point that it can run on different os.
