I think Java's strength will be in developing applications, not applets. They will get the browser problem solved, but until bandwidth dramatically increases and is extremely cheap, or until 98% of the class files you need to run your app come with the client side OS, any application of substance won't be running in a browser. My view is that Java's natural place is in writing components, and processes for the middle tier. Windows client services are probably best written in VB or Delphi at this point. And since Windows currently has 85% (and growing) of the client market, why fight it? Perhaps for non-PC devices Java could be used compete well for client services, but today it is just too damn much of a headache (comparatively) to get a great looking Windows client written in Java, to run well on Windows platforms. Now in a year, perhaps this will no longer be the case. But today, I still get more frustrated over Java Windows Client coding than any other Java coding that I do.
