Oops. When I switched to JDK1.1.5 I inadvertently also switched
from using a Netscape Java40.jar that did not include the java 1.1 patch

from Netscape. Installing the 1.1 patch magically made jbcl layout
objects subclasses of awt components again. Sorry for the false alarm.
