Adobe does sell Acrobat for multiple platforms.  I believe you will
need to use Acrobat to create a pdf.  The semi-good news is that the
pdf-writer just looks like a print driver to the user and not much
different that the print-to-file options you always had with
postscript.  

The bad news is that printing with the AWT classes does not seem to be
all that portable.  While the code is the same, the resulting output
looks different on different machines.  And not in minor ways.  Once,
you get printing looking good for all your printers on winNT, for
instance, it will be totally unacceptable on win95.  And they use the
same JDK!  In perusing Sun's Java Developer Connection site, many
others have found this problem.
