Can I embed a font in a Java app?

I have an app that I would like to move to Java. It is written in Delphi,
and it relies on a bit-map font that I made with my (ancient) copy of
Resource WorkShop. That font is incorporated in my app as a resource. Can
I do something like that in Java?
This is important to me because my app requires a number of special
characters which are not found in common fonts.

Any ideas?

thanks,

James
