One Question which (I guess) it's easy to answer to someone familiar with Java.

Let's say that in the primary window, I hold the references of the
opened child windows.

Currently I make the follow check to prevent multiple instances of the
same child:

    if(iw_st_families==null){
       iw_st_families = new w_st_families();
       iw_st_families.validate();
       iw_st_families.setVisible(true);
      } else {
      iw_st_families.setVisible(true);
    }

However this is wrong. The iw_st_families==null is true only the
first time. If I open and then dispose() the window, the variable is
not null.

So... please forgive my ignorant in this but...
why dispose is not like destroying the object?
What value will iw_st_families have after the garbage collection?
Is there a safe way to determine if the object is valid?
