Date problem?

I'm very confused with the use of dates in Java. It's just a mess.

First
Why are all the get methods in java.util.Date deprecated. If you think
that maybe java.sql.Date has them you're wrong because java.sql.Date
extends java.util.Date but the methods like getMinute() are implemented
like:
...
int getMinute()
{
    throw Illegal....
}
If this methods are deprecated then which methods should I use. The help
files doesn't say anything

Second.
How do i make Date arithmetic. There isn't a decent operator for Date
substraction or Addition.

Third
There isn't suitable convertions between Date related classes like
GregoryanCalendar or Calendar

Fourth
the SimpleDateFormat is just that SIMPLE. You have to do a lot of work
to do what you want.

Fifth
the toString method of GregorianCalendar doesn't work
it returns the class name

I think Java is a great language and has a lot of future, but faults
like this make you think twice when considering it as a serious tool for
professional development

I would really appreciate any help.
