Convert Delphi Pascal to Java?

Is there a dev tool that can take a Delphi Pascal project and do this? How
about JBuilder?

No. While it's possible to map raw language from one to the other, the
libraries are considerably different and mapping VCL to Swing, for
example, would be a nightmare.

In addition to what Kevin said, let me warn you to stay clear of
Delphi2Java. I do not like knocking products, but I could never get this
thing to work and it is totally unsupported.

So if you see it on the Web, take heed to the warning!

You are much better off recoding this or trying to use Component Pascal
to do the conversion and then use the JVM from Component Pascal. Of
course none of the VCL objects are going to convert.

While it is possible to create mapping libraries from VCL to Java, you
would find it much easier task to recode in Java or a JVM supported
language to begin with.

BTW, Java 6 is going to include a Visual Basic VM runtime. I have no
idea how feature complete it is or isn't.

One more thing. There is a JNI tool for calling Delphi from Java or visa
versa. Last time I looked, it was on the Borland Open Tools site.

I was just reading about this. I find this *truly* disturbing...

Umm, where did you read this? A URL would be appreciated.

Java 6 has a scripting *framework*, and a few popular scripting
languages (Rhino == javascript, JRuby, BeanShell, etc.) will be
available for it.

Is that what you're referring to? Or something spun off from "Project
semplice"?

http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/features.html doesn't list
anything like this. (Note: many of the links on that page are broken
because someone added "/"s after filenames like "changes6.html/" -
you'll have to cut and paste the URLs manually to follow the links).

Yes, this is where it is coming from

http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2006/05/19/write-java-web-apps-in-visual-basic-or-javascript/

It was announced at Javapolis 2006.

Here is another link:

http://www.javapolis.com/confluence/display/JP06/Project+Semplice

I misstated that it would be a part of the Java 6 platform. It will not,
of course.

Here is a better informational link that shows VB being developed in the
NetBeans IDE (ultimately for Java byte code compilation).

2 of the 3 developers of Project Semplice no longer work at Sun. Check
out Tor Norbye's blog:

http://blogs.sun.com/tor/entry/semplice_update

"In any case, as the blog title suggests, the project is not dead. It
was a research project, we've learned a lot, and the technology is now
forming the basis for some great new scripting tools coming your way
very soon. Rising out of the ashes, so to speak! We'll have more to show
at JavaPolis in a few weeks, so keep your eyes peeled!"

Interesting. Thanks for that update.

Oh, OK. then. Yes, as David C. Browne noted, Semplice is hardly a
shipped product, and certainly not part of the standard JDK6
distribution (which is already out, by the way - it was released
officially this week!).

The only scripting engine that comes with the default distribution is
Javascript (the Rhino scripting engine from Mozilla). I believe JRuby,
Jython, BeanShell and Groovy are in the works (the integration into the
Java 6 scripting framework, I mean), and I'm sure IBM will also be out
with NetRexx integration at some point (shudder!).

Now that's one I haven't seen in a while, good ole Rexx!!

I have tried Groovy with it (while it was in beta) and that worked
pretty well.

Rexx. Blast from the past. My first job out of university was an
application written in Rexx. It was a great scripting language.

I'm more of a Ruby/JRuby fan now.

I used Rexx for some mainframe scripting a long time back. About 10
years ago now..

These days, most of my scripting language is limited to JavaScript. Have
tried Groovy to a limited degree.
