Hmmm. I've always called that the "thumb", but "evelator"
depicts it fairly well.

Is it possible that you are updating a project which
you started using JB 1.x? If so, then my guess is
that you are seeing the default look and feel.
To see how to set the look and feel of an project,
create a new application and look at the "main()"
method. It should read something like this:
try {
UIManager.setLookAndFeel(
new com.sun.java.swing.plaf.windows.WindowsLookAndFeel());
}
catch ( Exception e ) {
}
