Long time in Build Progress

I'm running JBuilder 2005 Developer on Debian Linux. I checked out a Java
project and tried to build it and there were many errors. Build Progress
looked like it had hung, but it was simply taking a *very* long time to
finish, like half and hour or more.

I have JBuilder 7 Enterprise on the same machine, so I tried the same
project with no changes. It of course had the same errors, but Build
Progress went as quickly as I expected it to.

Anyone else seen this?

Not a lot of Debian users here. Let's see if we can narrow it down.

1. How large is your project?
2. Are you using the same JDK as you used to compile on JB7?
3. Have you tried changing your compiler setting from "Borland Make" to
"Borland Make (JBuilder 8)". The dependency checker changed quite a bit.
4. Have you tried a "rebuild", instead of a "build". This could clear
out bad dependency files that may be slowing things down.

1. I can't say how large the project is. The number of errors counted if
you let Rebuild run for half an hour is 9000+
2. Yes, same JDK
4. I am doing the Rebuild Project under the Project menu

3. This seems to be the meat of the problem. I did what you suggested and
switched to "Borland Make (JBuilder8)" and things work much better.
JBuilder 7 seemed to be getting to some number of errors and stopping, and
this option seems to do the same, whereas "Borland Make" tries to gather
them all up and bogs down. My other big problem was that Cancel would not
work when this happened.

So I have a solution. What are the implications, in your opinion, of
keeping myself set to (JBuilder8) all the time?

Should I post a bug report somewhere about the behaviour I'm seeing when
there are many errors? If so, where in the www.borland.com world would that
go?

Well, that's good.

The dependency checker/builder changed drastically between 8 and 9. I'm
not sure what the implications would be. Once you've fixed the errors,
I would recommend going back to the regular Borland Make.
