When I attempt to design a new default application in JBuilder 2005 update 4 on Linux (Fedora Core 3), it throws: java.lang.SecurityException: System.exit() not allowed And displays the following in the message pane: Failed to create live visual subcomponent contentPane (BorderLayout) as JPanel contentPane;. Creating using default constructor javax.swing.JPanel Here are the stack trace and -verbose log: http://www.kavod.com/db/jb_security_exception_stack_trace.txt http://www.kavod.com/db/jb_security_exception_verbose_log.txt After the exception, I'm still able to interact with the Designer, but nothing retains any properties. For example, if I add a JButton, set the text property, switch to Source view, switch back to Design view, then the text property disappears. My environment: JBuilder 2005 Foundation for Linux, Update 4 (11.0.320.0), stock conf. Installed in /usr/local/JBuilder2005 as root Fedora Core 3 on Athlon-2700, 1 GB RAM. EN_US locale, nothing fancy. Sun Java 1.5 update 3 in /usr/java/latest, stock conf. The changelog for update 4 notes a very similar bug for Macs: [216094] Attempting to design a new default application on Macintosh throws java.lang.SecurityException: System.exit() not allowed and displays Failed to create live value from JPanel in the message pane. The design surface is red. You can use the designer (structure pane, palette, inspector), but you don't see design objects in the design surface. I've tried changing the JBuilder JDK to my system's /usr/java/1.4.2_08, re-installing, switching users, rebooting, and electro-magnetic shielding, but the problem persisted. :) Does anyone know what the source of the problem is or how I can work around it? Thanks in advance for your response. -- Daniel Browning <db@kavod.com>

The UI Designer works by creating a live instance of your component. That
means that it is actually executing some of the code for the component.
It looks like the code is calling System.exit(), which the Designer cannot
allow, since that would shut down JBuilder. The other errors follow from
that one.
