I just tried this and the query returned values starting with 'A'

SELECT INST
FROM "D:\apps\local\inst.dbf" Inst
WHERE  INST LIKE 'A%'

Make sure you move to the next line in the Criteria section or you criteria
will not be saved.

Got it to crash once, but could not reproduce.
