I did get that wrong. It gets better. Kent Beck, the inventor of the flagship Agile software process called "Extreme Programming", invented [most of it] when he was brought in to Chrysler to recover a dying Smalltalk project. The new process worked great, and within 1.5 years the C3 project (Chrysler Comprehensive Compensation) was successfully printing the checks for good chunk of the workers. >25% or so. (The software obstacle is that years of fidgeting between unions, managers & politicians created an absurd patchwork of conflicting rules for the bumps, deductions, and taxes from each check, depending on everything from a worker's hire date to a plant's jurisdiction. Yes, unions & taxes suck blah blah blah...) When Daimler bought into Chrysler, they did not want to understand the C3 project, so they simply added it to the usual arbitrary list of "things to cut". Hence, to this day, whenever some frootloop blogger wants to try to make a name for themselves, they can cite Daimler dropping the C3 project to detract from Extreme Programming ~ invariably in ways that prove they don't understand it. (Sound familiar?) They will say stupid things like, "Unfortunately, the C3 project was so full of bugs that failed on 75% percent of the checks." That is patently false, because the software process worked via "phased delivery". The C3 project successfully targeted 25% of the paychecks, and disregarded the rest. Control over your exact feature set is _not_ the same thing as "surprise bugs". C3 simply declined to print the remaining checks, and it efficiently allowed the old system to print them. But because Daimler dumped XP, detractors can then say, "Unfortunately, before Chrysler abandoned XP, other teams thought it would work, and they started adopting it too!" Yes, it rankles when you missed a new wave of progress when lots of early adopters got in before you. But to this day Chrysler still uses the XP process... Sounds familiar, right? C-;
