On December 9, 1956, three small brothers drowned in a lake near the City of
Longmont. There was no one trained to recover their bodies. This tragedy
pointed out the lack of rescue personnel or equipment available to respond
to such emergencies. This led to the organization of the Longmont Emergency
Unit and it's activation on June 25, 1957 as the first dive rescue team of
it's kind in the State of Colorado.

Today, L.E.U. is comprised of men and women who are on call 24 hours a day,
365 days a year, trained to respond to many types of emergencies.

Members are dedicated volunteers!

In 1997, our volunteers responded to over 150 calls for service,
representing more than 9,800 man hours in service to the community. If paid
personnel had been used for these hours, the cost to the county would have
been in excess of $350,000 for manpower alone.
This figure does not include the additional cost of equipment and training.
Whether it's a mass disaster, traffic control at a parade, cutting an
accident victim from a wrecked car, or saving someone from drowning, we
pride ourselves on over 40 years of professionalism.

The Longmont Emergency Unit is funded partially by Boulder County and
partially by the City of Longmont for operating expenses alone.
The Unit relies heavily on their own fund raising efforts through corporate
gifts, grants and private donations to raise capital funds to update aging
equipment, for training and to purchase new rescue apparatus in order to
ensure the utmost safety for both victim and rescuer.

This November, the voters of Boulder County will be asked to support a sales
and use tax to assist Longmont Emergency Unit and Boulder Emergency Squad
with funding for new buildings and capital projects not currently funded by
governmental sources. Both agencies are in desperate need of new facilities
and equipment.
Our current residence is over 30 years old and 8 pieces of valuable rescue
equipment sit outside in the weather.

Ballot initiative 1A will ask for the passage of a 0.05% sales and use tax
in Boulder County and will state that over $3 million will be raised over a
period of 2 years.
These funds will be put into a county emergency rescue fund to be shared by
L.E.U. and B.E.S. In realistic terms, this will represent an additional 5
cents on a $100 purchase.
--------
For over 35 years, Boulder Emergency Squad and Longmont Emergency Unit have
been there to respond to help others.
We may have helped YOU in some time of need or a friend or relative while
they visited Boulder County.
Passage of this initiative is a way to "repay the favor".
5 cents on a $100 purchase. That's not much to ask when a life is on the
line.
