When it was created it responded to a lot of perceived needs. And it's worked, for a while. Unfortunately it's about to go broke and what do you do with an elderly individual with no retirement savings? What would you do, kick him out on the street? This may have been accepted practice in certain societies in the past but I doubt it will be in ours. Like it or not we are, in part, a welfare state. There are real good reasons why social security has been so protected by politicians; because we're all going to reach old age and retired persons are a large and growing percentage of the electorate. > >Maybe if everyone in this country quit spending so much on their cars >and clothes and cafe lattes they could all save some money for their >old age. Good point. Couldn't have said it better myself. The people selling those cars, clothes, and cafe lattes are trying to earn a living and save for retirement too. In fact they count on us buying those products. I don't know, there are no easy answers to this one, and somebody, some president and congress are going to have to make the tough decision. R. Foreman
