The shrinking attention span fostered by video is closely tied to the anti-intellectual force in American culture: the erosion of general knowledge. People accustomed to hearing their president explain complicated policy choices by snapping "I'm the decider" may find it almost impossible to imagine the pains that Franklin D. Roosevelt took, in the grim months after Pearl Harbor, to explain why U.S. armed forces were suffering one defeat after another in the Pacific. In February 1942, Roosevelt urged Americans to spread out a map during his radio "fireside chat" so that they might better understand the geography of battle. The new American dumbness: not lack of knowledge per se but arrogance about that lack of knowledge. The problem is not just the things we do not know (consider the one in five American adults who, according to the National Science Foundation, thinks the sun revolves around the Earth); it's the alarming number of Americans who have smugly concluded that they do not need to know such things in the first place. Call this anti-rationalism -- a syndrome that is particularly dangerous to our public institutions and discourse. Not knowing a foreign language or the location of an important country is a manifestation of ignorance; denying that such knowledge matters is pure anti-rationalism. The toxic brew of anti-rationalism and ignorance hurts discussions of U.S. public policy on topics from health care to taxation. We have tried stupid before. Now we need to be smart. Nearly 14 million Americans are jobless and the outlook for many of them is grim. Since there is just one job available for every five individuals looking for work, four of the five are out of luck. Instead of a land of opportunity, the U.S. is increasingly becoming a place of limited expectations. Limitless greed, unrestrained corporate power and a ferocious addiction to foreign oil have led us to an era of perpetual war and economic decline. Young people today are staring at a future in which they will be less well off than their elders, a reversal of fortune that should send a shudder through everyone. "I strongly agree that grassroots democracy grows from the local community up, but at the same time, we have a state of emergency I think at the national level. And to silence the only hope of an opposition voice in this election when so much is at stake, I think would be a terrible loss for the American people. There's no reason why Americans should have to walk into the voting booth in November and have only, effectively, two Wall Street-sponsored choices." - Dr. Jill Stein Green Party nominee for President of the United States > > >Americans generally agree that lobbyists, major corporations, and banks > >have too much power, potentially making them vulnerable to calls for > >greater regulation. > ><http://www.gallup.com/poll/147026/Americans-Decry-Power-Lobbyists-Corpor > >ations-Banks-Feds.aspx> -- Welcome to the New America. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA736oK9FPg> or E Pluribus Unum Green Party Nominee Jill Stein & Running Mate, Cheri Honkala <http://www.democracynow.org/2012/7/13/green_party_nominee_jill_stein_running>
