THE X WINDOW SYSTEM: PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELF, FRIEND OR FOE?

The next meeting of the Front Range UNIX Users Group will be in room 123 of the
CU Academic Computing Center building at Arapahoe and Marine Streets in Boulder
at 4:00 P.M. on Thursday June 25, 1992. Marine St. curves to intersect
Arapahoe at 38th St.; the Computing Center is on the southwest corner.

In preparation for the August X debate and to simply learn about an important
current topic, Geoff Thompson will present a technical overview of the X Window
System, along with a collection of curious and informative facts about X.

At first glance, X appears arbitrarily complex. And--like it or not--X is
being adapted by a very large portion of the UNIX and workstation vendor
community. At times it shows great promise to solve many problems, and at
other times it seems like an unmanageable beast. Should we love it or
should we shoot it? That will be for you to decide.

This meeting will attempt to give you just enough information to be dangerous.
The talk will emphasize the fundamental concepts, the key ideas, the areas
where it has encouraged new ideas in window systems, areas where it has been
successful, and areas in which it has shortcomings.

The complete topic of X, from the server through the various toolkits, is at
least as large and complex as UNIX by almost any measurement. The subject
really requires a good day to give a proper overview and can take from several
days to many months to learn how to program properly. But, of course, we will
cover it all in just under 2 hours.

Geoff will cover the X client/server architecture, network transparency, window
managers, the X protocol, events and requests, graphics capabilities, the X
library, the X intrinsics, look and feel definitions and implementations, and
toolkits. Last, to keep the talk from being a purely academic experience,
there will be a review of several miscellaneous facts about X, from the trivial
to the obscure, which could provoke lots of strongly opinionated discussion.

Please come on time! There is a lot to cover and there is potential for a
tremendous amount of discussion.

JOIN US FOR DINNER

We invite you to retire with the FRUUG folks after Geoff's talk for dinner at
Jose Muldoon's Mexican Restaurant across the street. This month's dinner
features the tostada bar, drink or dessert, tax and tip, for $10. This will
be a good place to continue the discussions that will inevitably start at the
meeting.

FRUUG MATERIALS VIA FTP

As we can collect them, we are making our speakers' viewgraphs, presentation
materials, etc., available via anonymous ftp. Have a look on csn.org under the
directory ~ftp/fruug. We have viewgraphs from Dick Dunn and Rob Kolstad's
talks on Affordable UNIX, Steve Fogel's viewgraphs on Interviews, and the Plan
9 documents, all in PostScript format, Version 4.19 of perl, FRUUG membership
information, and a PostScript version of the current meeting announcement.
The current meeting announcement may be printed out in case you need a map, or
if you want to post a particular announcement.

SUMMER SCHEDULE

Here's the current line-up for the rest of the summer. We've had to postpone
the TCL/TK talk until some time this fall, so we have a new topic for our
meeting in July:

  * July 16, 3:30PM, a talk on Resource Discovery, High-Speed Protocols, and
Network Management by Mike Schwartz of the University of Colorado, Boulder.

  * August, date to be announced, the Great X Debate.
