A Home for Merlin

For the past 4 years, we've been fortunate enough to have Merlin, a
neutered male chow mix, in our lives. We adopted him at 8 weeks and he
has been a wonderful dog--loving, affectionate, and fiercely protective
(he's a great watchdog).
But we must find a new home for Merlin, because he is definitely an
"alpha" dog, and can be very aggressive towards other dogs, particularly
smaller dogs, who come near our house. The problem is that we now have a
baby, who is smaller, of course, than Merlin, and we don't trust Merlin
around him, because he recently snapped our son when he crawled over and
touched his legs.
Merlin is very protective, and can be aggressive to people or dogs whom he
percieves as intruders, so care must be taken to keep doors closed, etc.
A vet has recommended prozac, which has had excellent results with
aggressive dogs when combined with training, but he does not recommend
that it be relied on when children are involved. If the new owner would
like to consider the prozac option, we would be willing to pay for a
month's prescription.
Merlin's ideal new home would be: a childless home with an informed owner
who knows how to be the "alpha", but who keeps Merlin in line in a loving
way, who is willing to keep him on a leash when Merlin is outside, and who
has a large, secure backyard. It's best if there are no other animals in
the house. He would be a very rewarding companion for the person who is
willing to invest the time and energy in a loyal, affectionate furry
friend.
