In fact, for people who are used to using bikes as transport, bikes
work just fine for transporting little kids.  You can use a seat on
the back of the bike if you have one kid and s/he's small, but most
serious bicyclists opt for trailers.  They keep the kid dry if it's
raining, plus you can put lots of toys and books in the trailer for
entertainment.  And of course, most trailers now for sale haul two
kids, and the big ones take four.  

I get tired of this argument.  People who don't want to bicycle even
under perfect conditions invent reasons why it's impossible in less
than perfect conditions.  If you don't want to bicycle,
don't,  but don't tell me it's impossible when I do it quite easily
every day, and so do many of my friends. 

And I do wish you guys who 
drive would pay your own way, and figure out a way to stop all that
pollution.  No matter what Joshua Levy tells you, air pollution in
the valley has gotten worse in the last eight years, and I was cursing
you drivers when I was suffering from a nasty case of pollution-caused
asthma this weekend while climbing Old La Honda.  You're the ones who
drive,  and I was the one who was paying the price.
