I got a lot of positive responses which I will follow up on -
I'd like to thank everyone for their enthusiasm and suggestions!

There is one thing I should clarify. David Roth writes:

The $40 million dollars currently funding the project is entirely
donations (products, staff time, cash). Since to my knowledge the
music sector hasn't really been approached about Sequoia 2000,
I thought this might be one way for interested parties to support
the project. As a musician and a writer, I perceive compositions,
performances, productions, and copyrights as extremely valuable
potential contributions.

Bob Wright writes:

Speaking for myself, I am spending many hours of my personal time
working on the project, in addition to the time which I spend as an
employee at the Department of Water Resources; although I must earn
a living, I do not always want a financial reward for my talents.

I believe that expertise should be used to achieve goals. A primary goal
in this case is to develop new computer applications which will facilitate
better research on the earth system. Naturally, not everyone will be
interested in donating resources to this particular cause.
