John,

Try the Lights of America 30-watt circular ring CFs. They definitely
generate more light than a 100-watt incandescent and fit nicely into
an ordinary lamp harp. We have two, got 'em on sale for $14.95.

The 27-watt LOA upright bulb does not fit in a regular harp (have
to buy a 12-incher and still it's a squeeze, and it generates less
light than a 100-watt incandescent, regardless of the hype.

The 18-watt Panasonic CFs are a nice substitute for a 75-watt bulb
in an open fixture -- they throw as much light, but it's softer.
So far, haven't been able to find these suckers for under $20.

None of these buzz or flicker, and the LOA lights are close enough
to instant-on that I can't tell the difference. The Panasonic takes
about a minute or two to warm up to full radiance.

We have about a dozen of these bulbs of various kinds in the house
now, and this is what our electric usage and bills look like:

Month Year

             Usage (kWh) Reduction Bill Reduction
             1990 1991 1990 1991

November 778 786 --- 103.47 112.40 ---
December 828 619 25% 106.09 88.85 16%

             1991 1992 1991 1992

January 754 504 33 99.51 71.54 28
February 688 491 29 90.34 70.78 22

(Hope these numbers will help dispel your superstitions. 8^))
