Nah, at Stanford saving money is more important. You've probably got
cheap ballasts and cheap bulbs. Compact fluorescents may buzz, but my
hearing isn't good enough to catch it -- I believe that they run the
tube itself at 40 kilohertz. This also means that you probably won't
spot the flicker, either.

Somewhere (Brookstone catalog, I think) I saw an ad for halogen bulbs
that were more or less the same size and shape and socket as the
incandescent bulbs that one typically buys. These save energy, though
not as much as fluorescent bulbs, but they give a great light, fit in
existing fixtures, and also last longer than the usual incandescent
bulbs (useful for those hard-to-reach fixtures).

We recently bought a twin-tube circular fixture from Home Despot for
about $100. It doesn't buzz. Because interest rates are low, and the
marginal rate for power consumption is not, it will pay for itself
fairly quickly, since we run that light whenever we are home.
