Try tungsten-halogen (quartz halogen) lights, you get roughly 2 times
the lumens per watt as with a standard incandescent.  Be sure to get a
glass cover for the light, they tend to put out quite a bit in the
short and longwave UV spectrum.  Another possibility is the clip on
reflectors available for some of the compact fluorescents, this should
increase the directed light.
