Hello, I haven't seen this subject addressed recently, and this newsgroup seems to have a pretty low volume these days anyway, so here it is: Our 3-year old Krups Brewmaster coffeemaker recently stopped working. The light on the "on" switch comes on, but the heating plate doesn't heat, and neither does water heat and go through the tube to drip onto the filter. Naturally, this being America, we went down to the store (Whole Earth Access, although other stores had similar prices and selections) and purchased a new one, same model, for $29.95. We put the old one into its box, and we will put it in the trash can someday soon.... UNLESS someone can suggest a constructive alternative to disposal. Needless to say, this coffeemaker represents a case of "planned obsolescence." Nothing against Krups, but it's designed to be replaced, not repaired, when it breaks. It's cheap. Nonetheless, it wouldn't take much to repair it, and I can't help thinking that I'm wasting a large chunk of non-renewable resources by throwing it out. If you know of any organizations, groups or individuals who are helping to save the earth and protect the quality of our environment by restoring appliances like these, please e-mail me. If I learn anything interesting, I'll report same to the net. Thanks in advance, Eric Edlund U.C.Berkeley Geography eric@pollen1.berkeley.edu *or* map@violet.berkeley.edu
