More Evidence For Electric Cars

I have already posted overwhelming evidence that electric cars produce
far less noxious pollutants per mile than gasoline powered cars do.
The California Air Resources Board has documented this. Their study
results are summarized in their 1991 Annual Report.

As I said in earlier postings, electric cars produce 99% less hydrocarbons,
80% less Nitrogen Oxides, and 97% less Carbon Monoxide per mile than
gasoline powered cars.

Here is some futher information about CO2 production:

The National Audubon Society, in their book "CO2 Diet" show that each kilowatt-
hour of electricity used generates 1.5 pounds of CO2. They also show that
each gallon of gasoline used generates 22 pounds of CO2.

The typical electric car (including mine) uses 8 kilowatt-hours to travel
50 miles. This 50 mile trip would produce 12 pounds of CO2.

This same car (A converted Ford Tempo) gets an average of 25 MPG including
a normal mix of freeway and city driving. So 50 miles of driving would
produce 44 pounds of CO2.

The electric car produces 73% less CO2 than the same size gasoline powered
car.

I include here the information about where I bought my car. If you already
have it, you can skip the rest of this message.

I bought the car from :

Solar Electric Engineering
116 Fourth Street
Santa Rosa, CA 95401-6212 (707) 542-1990, FAX (707) 542-4358

It is a 1987 Ford Temp 4-door. It is an economy car, but not extremely
small, i.e., it is larger than an Escort.

They sell three different electric cars, all standard cars that have been
converted. The following is quoted from their sales literature. Note
that if you live in California, you can subtract $1,000.00 from the price
as there is a $1,000 tax credit from the State of California for purchasers
of electric cars, only from Solar Electric.

   Electron-One

World's most practical electric car. Seats five adults, ultra-quiet
controller, solar maintainer for the auxiliary battery.

Range: 45 to 60 miles, up to 100 miles per day with intermediate recharge
Speed: 55 to 60 miles per hour
     Price: $17,700.00

   Electron-Two

Van with solar panels! Seats 5 to 7 people comfortably.

     Range: 45 to 60 miles
Speed: 55 to 60 miles per hour.
     Price: $26,700.00

   Destiny

If you want the best...One of the most unique cars in the world, this
is it. A sleek two-seater sports car with integrated solar panels.

     Range: 60 to 70 miles
Speed: 60 to 70 miles per hour
     Price: $28,000.00

   Solar Option costs $2,000.

They also will give you AC, stereo, etc.

They also sell a kit for you do convert your own car, and it costs $5,900.00
without the batteries. Or, you can bring them an economy size front wheel
drive car and they will convert it for you fro $9,000.00.

The also have a book on converting cars and it costs $25.00.

Finally, they usually have a couple of conversions they have done, and the
price varies. Right now they have about 4 cars for sale starting at about
$10,000.00.

I have no connection with the company except that I have purchased one of their
cars. I paid the full price for my Tempo (Electron I), becuase it was in
excellent condition, inside and out. The original vehicle only had 50,000
miles on it. You can negotiate with them on price for older vehicles if
they have them on hand.

I recommend you at least give them a call. Ask for Alan Lindsley, and mention
my name. I just want him to know I am referring customers to him!

By the way, Solar Electric is the only competent company making feasible
electric cars that I have found, and I looked quite a bit. They are a
respectable firm, and have sold cars to a lot of people, for instance,
Chevy Chase, Kirstie Alley, etc., have bought their cars. In addition,
the Destiny is featured in the motion picutre Naked Gun 2 1/2, out on
video now.

Good luck!
