With all the dialogue about deforestation, and "..what is a tree
worth.." etc.. I thought I'd add yet another layer of information
from a different perspective. This, in the form of a book I
recently learned about. Paraphrasing from an article contributed
by Jim Eaton in the Wilderness Record (monthly publication of the
CA Wilderness Coalition) : "If logging looks bad, it is bad".
Jim reviews a book by author Gordon Robinson, titled : The Forest
and the Trees: A Guide to Excellent Forestry, Island Press, 250
pages. "Good forestry is not a lucrative business. It never was
and never will be, because it takes longer than a lifetime to
grow high-quality timber, longer than ANYONE can wait for a
return on investment." The book's three parts , 1)history of
forestry in the U.S., 2) silvicultural systems, and 3) forest
planning/management are combined with an annotated bibliography
with 384 quotations, summaries, and paraphrases from the author's
lifetime of forestry knowledge. Activist will find this later
part indispensable for defending good timber management
techniques. I expect to see many of these references showing up
in comments and appeals on timber sales and forest plans. This
book is a must for citizen activists. It was written to be a tool
for those who want to change the way the U.S. Forest Service
manages our lands. "If the agency is allowed to continue on its
present course, the nation's old-growth forests will vanish
forever, perhaps as soon as the end of this century."
