The Grass Valley Group, Inc. does several things. First, all aluminum cans are sorted-out by the janitor at each trash can. Everyone is asked not to bury them in the bowels of the trash ! We use e-mail extensively to minimize paper work. Paper recycling bins are located throughout the buildings. Our main facility has no piped water, sewer, or natural gas. Waste water from restrooms, etc is treated onsite and used for irrigation, and eventually gets back into the aquifer. It is reputed to be cleaner than state/federal requirements for drinkable water ! Waste from manufacturing is cleansed of soluble salts which are crystalized for conventional burial (instead of aqueous solutions which must be dumped at toxic waste sites). Metal scraps are recycled. The cogeneration facility uses excess heat from electrical generation to heat hot water, the buildings, and run plating equipment. A solar-powered cooling system is (or soon will be) online.
