I for one am sick of the Florida affair, political maneovering, finger pointing, and such. All we can seem to hope for is someone will send us an email pointing out how stupid we are as a nation to allow this to continue, especially at Floriduhhhhhh's expense. It seems to me if you can find the holes on a punch card in a bingo game, state lottery, mega bucks, then you know what hole to darken in or punch out in an election campaign. Lets be done with it all. If it remains unresolved by Saturday, then call for everyone to write their congress people and advise them in mass, we will no longer pay taxes since we are not governed by a democracy, then see how fast this fiasco is resolved. Think that we should as a nation follow the Consititional law. In point: Since the election is deadlocked, as case precedence provides under law, declare the election a tie, then the final voting will take place in the house of representatives. They by the will of the people will determine the next president. In future elections, would like to see a change in the law, specific to newsmedia coverage of the election. I propose this: No ballot tabulations will be released to the press, television, newspapers, news services or other sources until the day after the election. This only makes sense as the very time we were leaving to cast our ballot, it was announced Gore had won Florida and all the New England states, so what did our vote count for? We returned home and did not vote as what matter did it make. If we felt this way, how many more eligible voters also felt this way, according to the LA Times, the turn out in Orange County California, 1.4 million possible voters, this was the lowest turn out since 1972, with only 52% of those eligible actually voting. Why? The election had already been determined per the boob tube. Get my point? Many of you are too young to remember the old punch cards. In college, we had to learn programming, a real pain in the arce! Fortran especially. At any rate, in 1965, I had over a 1,000 punch cards hand typed for my mid term exam. It took litterally days to do this, sit there at a key board and punch holes into a 80lb weight computer card. The point to be made here, is the more the cards are handled, the more mistakes that are made. In running a pre-test of the programming I was required to submit for class credit, the program was perfect, one minor flaw. That card was redone, and submitted for final approval. I got a 90% rather than 100%. Even the instructor indicated that the more you handle the cards, the more error that is induced. Therefore the manual, eyestraining, laborious hand count of punch cards is absolutely ludicrous and error ridden. To correct this problem and given we have the present technology in place to correct future problems, I call for a computerized voting procedure, which can be done on the internet, or in the polling place simply by touching names on the ballot form as shown on the CRT or Monitor as it is now called. This system is already in place in mnay stores and help files within large department stores. If private industry can do this, so can our state and local governments. It is faster and more accurate than any punch card would ever dream of being. There are many who say that the electorial college is unfair and should be done away with. Possibly, but lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet. Maybe since we have two senators to represent each state regardless of population, then maybe too we should have one electorial vote by each state for the appropriate candidate. Winner takes all as specified under the consitition. Ludrious? Would seem to be more fair and equitable. The total votes obtained in the state would never be made known under amended election law, all that would be determined is voters elected candidate: A, B, C or D to the highest office of the land. Copy this and sent it to your elected representatives in the house and in the senate. Maybe we collectively can make a difference, maybe not now, but certainly in the next election. Bear
