I believe Tom Brokaw best said it: we have declared Florida's 25 electorial votes for Al Gore, "all we need now for us to win is Illinois and Wisconsin and we will have elected our next president, Al Gore." Thought responsible news reporting ment that the news must be reported without bias. This no longer is the case and presents a key election issue: The election was being declared as a victory for Al Gore while the polls on the western half of the country were still open. This caused many voters in pro republican communities to stay home as their vote did not count. This is further substantiated by the fact that many people accept what is reported on television as the absolute truth, when in reality it is flawed. Case in point per the Los Angeles Times, 11/8/00, the voter turn out in Orange County, which represents a Republican stronghold, was only 54%, the lowest since the 1972 election. There are over a million registered voters in Orange Couunty which would have swung the popular vote to George Bush. Believe it can be reasonably argued that the news media in their quest to bring forth the news and campaign on behalf of their favored political candidate, overstepped their bounds in reporting election results, so many people stayed home, did not vote as it was all over except the shouting at least as Mr. Brokaw and many others were concerned. The power of the television set is an awesome power that was abused in this election in the furvor to get their first with the results and to see their candidate win the election.. All the major news networks, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CNN, relied on a single source to report the news without any substantiation as fact. A basic definition of negligence for the federal government to investigate once we the people, not the politician, determine who is our next elected president. In 1965, I was required to develop a mid term exam while in college using a program language called fortran. Then as now, the punch card was easily damaged, the more it was handled the more that it was subject to change. In some states, election ballots are pre-punched and held onto the card by teats and therefore even more fragile than the machine punched cards. Therefore, the Florida ballots are more subject to damage than the machine cut cards. The ballots in Florida pre-punched ballots have now been handled over three times and respectfully submit that the voter's intent cannot be determined as it is not best evidence and should therefore be thrown out of a court of law. Therefore, given political campaigning by the news media, bias, mis-statement of facts; I respectfully demand a election run-off between all four major political candidates, nation wide. A common ballot shall be used across the country, four candidates: Buchannon, Bush, Gore and Nader. Punch out the appropriate box for the voter's choice. Then machine count it. No recounts, no hand counts, that's it. Every eligible voter is given the chance to vote for their candidate, period! There shall be no political campaigning before or during the election runoff. The results of the election run-off will be announced the day after the election, this is only fair and equitable to all political candidates. Then and only then will we know the true will of the people and not the politician nor political party. This should be done with expediency prior to December 16. If we as a nation are not held personally and morally accountable for our own actions and we do not uphold the actions of those we elect to political office in equally high regard, then we as a nation deserve to have a "Consititional Crisis" and this is exactly where this election is headed, fueled by the news media. We deserve better than this, lets stand together and demand it be made so! Bear
