I will be working in Northern California (outside of the Bay Area) for about 4 or 5 months. I understand that CA is a stickler about car registration since they insist that if you are there for more than 20 days working, you must get CA plates. I am curious on how people have dealt with the registration. Here are the questions. 1. On the DMV employees, are they pretty mean or try to be nice/friendly ? 2. Do people ignore the rules and get away with this or are they caught pretty quick ? 3. If I register in CA, will I be required to turn in my out of state plates (physically)? 4. Also, would I be required to title my vehicle or would I be able to retain the out of state title ? 5. I know vehicles are given a VIN check by the DMV, how long does it take them to do this and does it require a special appointment beyond registration ?
