Here in LA we have free towing, gas, tire change, etc during rush hour
now, funded by Prop. C. The gas is really free! And, they are QUICK!
From 6-10am and 3-7pm they travel the freeways. Last week I ran out of
gas (duh!) and rigth when the lady on the call box answered, one of the
guys pulled up, I told the lady somebody was already there. He gave me
some gas (free) and explained how the system works (Prop. C, and so on).
Several times I have pulled over on the side of the freeway for strange
reasons, like to pickup something I dropped on the floor, or a spilled
soda or whatever, and what do you know, I look up and there is a guy in
the Metro Freeway Service Patrol truck...I just wave him on. This is a
REALLY cool service! Support whatever is need for this in the future! It
does help to keep the freeways moving.
ANyway, AAA is still great, and is TOTALLY worth the cost just to stay out
of the damned DMV lines. Actually, if you know which DMV to go to, it's
not bad. I once got to one, filled the forms, took my car and motorcycle
tests, got my picture and was gone in 15 minutes (somewhre in the middle
of nowhere, like San Gabriel area). Also, there's one out in the Valley
that's great after 4pm-5pm.
AAA still has the maps and trip planning and such. Just got an offer to
"upgrade" my current membership (some amount more, free until the next
renewal) which removes the gas charge (I think) and the mileage charge,
and offers like 3 or 4 other better things. I will check it out. I have
always loved them.
