Here is a short summary of Security Pacific accounts. Of course, in
the next few months they will be merging with Bank of America so who
knows how long this will be valid:
ValuAdded Checking:
$11.00 per month service charge.
Interest paid on minimum balance of $1,000.
Interest Checking:
No service charge on minimum balance of $1,500.
($9.50 per month if less than $1,500.)
Interest bearing.
Standard Checking:
No service charge on minimum balance of $750.
($7.50 per month if less than $750.)
No interest.
Discount/Student Checking:
No service charge on minimum balance of $100.
($7.50 per month if less than $100)
No interest.
Limit of 10 checks per month.
Limit of 2 NON-electronic deposits.
Unlimited use of ATM's.
Other Charges:
Stop payment = $10.00
Insufficient Funds = $10.00
Non-Security Pacific ATM use = $1.00
----
As far as I know, none of the checking accounts have a per check
charge. The bank seems to prefer not to return your checks (they
call it "Check Safekeeping" and will give free copies of your checks
upon request [if they cannot provide a copy of the check, they agree
to pay any monetary damages that arise as a result]). However, I
believe that in all of the accounts except "Discount/Student" you
can request to receive your checks--free of charge. But they really
push the Check Safekeeping.
All in all, I guess the fees aren't that bad. However, I've gone
through quite a few hassles getting my accounts straightened out.
They (Security Pacific) seem very unorganized. The latest fiasco is
that I opened an insured money market account. Since this is
technically a checking account (limited to 3 checks per month) they
made me get another ATM card for it (I also have interest checking).
In other words, I have to have two Security Pacific ATM cards (one
for checking and one for money market). That's inconvenient, but
what's even worse is: 1) I had to go to the bank to start the money
market; 2) They then had to send my new ATM card through the mail;
and 3) When I got the card in the mail, I had to return to the bank
to get it activated. Very silly.
