Rental cars in Stockton?

A friend of mine and I are planning to attend Winterail '92, a
railroad photography exhibition in Stockton on March 7.  (This is
a killer show, by the way, if anyone is interested in more info).
Being true to the railroad theme, we're going to take Amtrak's San
Joaquin to Stockton the day before.  But the logistics of the
train station/hotels/meeting place dictate getting a car unless
Stockton has a lot more public transportation than most Calif.
cities.

So, the question is:  when we arrive in beautiful (?) downtown
Stockton, what are our options for rental cars?  Will any of them
pick us up at the Amtrak station and deliver us there Sunday
morning?  Any hot tips on places to stay (nice/reasonable) would
be appreciated, too.
