(From a Usenet posting by MajorOz) It seems that Hellman's Mayonnaise was originally a British product and was exported around the world. One of the biggest shipments -- 24,000 quart jars -- was in the cargo hold of the Titanic. The Titanic was due to continue on from NYC, after its maiden crossing, to Mexico, where they were eagerly awaiting the shipment, as all supplies had been used up. We all know what happened: the tragic loss of life.........and the loss of the 24K jars of Hellman's. The Mexicans were so struck by the loss that they set up a national day of mourning that is still observed today.........as Sinko de Mayo -- Nollaig MacKenzie http://www.yorku.ca/nollaig
