Can someone help with this.

tim=`date|cut -c1-8`
grep "$tim" ~/bin/oncall_pager.log    -- gives the following result
Wed Oct 4 00:59:12 CDT 2006   zeusp650   cycldadm

tim=`date|cut -c1-10`
grep "$tim" ~/bin/oncall_pager.log    -- gives nothing

Why is not recognizing
