Here is a list of jazz in Cambridge found over the past few months. The jazz in question falls into the category of improvisation on the standards as listed here http://www.jazzstandards.com/compositions/index.htm The Andy Bowie quartet plays every Sunday evening at the Cricketers Melbourne Place between 8.30pm and 11.10pm the pub has a licence until midnight, occasionlly 1a.m. Samples of the music played can be found at http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=953052 The only regular performer is Andy Bowie and the drums / bass / keyboard players come and go with occasional guest appearances by young musicians still at college. Next week on the 19th Sarah Tandy is playing as a guest on the keyboard, on leave from the Royal Academy. Providing the Cricketers is open on Boxing Day Andy Bowie will be playing then also. In term time Jazz at Johns is worth keeping in touch with, they have a website which vanished at the end of term www.jazzatjohns.co.uk but announcements and exact location may be found on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/jazzatjohns along with past events and information. The Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra CUJO play in term time, have a website here http://www.cujo.org.uk/performances with forthcoming perfomances on the 4th and 22nd February. I heard them on the 26th November at Johns and they were superb. Even less frequent are jazz events at the Hidden Rooms in Jesus Lane, beneath the Pizza Express, http://www.hiddenthing.com/events.html I haven't been so can't comment on the quality or otherwise of the guest bands. I think you'll find that's wishful thinking. I'm not going to dismiss your post out of hand but I gave up on the Geldart quite recently when I arrived one Saturday evening to find a jazz band that was playing for a private party with no acknowledgement from the pub that that dropped their jazz nights despite my being on their entirely useless and ineffective mailing list. In addition the room in which the jazz used to take place is a restaurant and not a bar so unless you are/were going there to eat it's almost entirely pointless. Sorry but I no longer regard that pub as a reliable source of information or regular jazz venue, YMMV as always. PB

Tommaso Starace a few months ago was one of the best gigs I've ever seen. Last Tuesday of each month (winter only, they don't want to annoy the neighbourhood when the windows are open) is the regular "Backstreet Jazz" gig with top UK players. Publicity isn't as absolutely up-to-date as it could be, which is a pity given the quality, but Local Secrets seems to have been reliable so far. Al
