With his permission, I reproduce for those interested an item
by Arnout de Waal from our local parish newsletter:

<quote>
In response to a hand-out that I gave to Storey's
Way drivers and local residents on Monday 1 July
(and featured in the July issue of the Girton Parish
News) about a hundred people wrote in to Peter
Littlefair, Head of Engineering Services in the
Cambridge City Council, requesting a meeting to
discuss difficulties with the width restriction. About
40% were Girton residents.

On *8 July* the posts on the approach from
Huntingdon Road were moved by about 2ft in the
direction of Madingley Road. Later that week
people who had written in received a reply dated *11
July* from Lindsey Lucas, Principal Engineer,
stating that "it had teen decided to move the posts
about 500mm from their present position, towards
Madingley Road ...", and that Engineering Services
"feel that a public meeting is not appropriate". At
the time of writing I am still lobbying the local ward
councillors for further action.

Whatever step comes next, *I urgently need
evidence of damage caused to vehicles by the
width restriction.* If you have suffered any damage
yourself or know of someone who has, please send
details as soon as possible (ideally stating date,
time, nature of damage, cost of repairs) to Arnout
de Waal c/o Cambridge Academy of English, High
Street, Girton, Cambridge CB3 OQD. *Any
personal details included in the information will
remain confidential.* Thank you for your support.

Mr de Waal can be contacted as arnout@caeco.demon.co.uk.

One of the people wo had written in did *not* actually receive
any reply at all, but perhaps that was because i was already in
correspondence with Mr Littlefair over the state of the humps,
as a result of which one of them has been somewhat improved this
very week (at the contractor's expense).
