It looks like Google requires the http:// at the start of a URL, so that an abbreviated one starting www fails to produce a good link. Here's a test for my benefit, but feel free to join in with variants I haven't used. Using an example URL: http://www.example.com/ http://www.example.com www.example.com And the same for a "real" URL: http://www.cam.ac.uk/ http://www.cam.ac.uk www.cam.ac.uk That's it, David

Um, I meant Google Groups and I know it's not the greatest newsreader. Briefly, full URLs work but partial ones don't get the completion that most modern browsers provide, so fail. > Using an example URL: > > http://www.example.com/ > > http://www.example.com The two above work, via Google Groups' intermediate yes/no redirection page with a faithful copy or not of the trailing slash /. For example: http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&q=http://www.example.com/ > www.example.com This one fails at/before the redirection page with a 404 error for http://www.google.com/www.example.com The variants of a "real" URL behave the same way.
