Whois server in Canada?

Good day everyone, I have a frequent need these days to use the 'whois' command to resolve Internet host names to meaningful site names. However, the 'whois' command in my Unix box interrogates the NIC in the U.S., whose answer is most often 'No match for "BLAHBLAH.CA"' when the site is in Canada. Hence the question, is there a whois server in Canada I can access? Or at least a list of sites I could get by anon. ftp? I don't know anything about CA*NET, except for my guess that it's the canadian portion of the Internet, so please bear with me if this question is inappropriate for this group. E-mail preferred, but feel free to post if you want. I will summarize if there's interest. Thanks in advance. -- Francois Yergeau (yergeau@phy.ulaval.ca) | De gustibus et coloribus Centre d'Optique, Photonique et Laser | non disputandum Departement de Physique | -proverbe scolastique Universite Laval, Ste-Foy, QC, Canada |

First off, my sincere apologies to everyone reading this group for having posted the same request twice in a four day interval. Why did I do such a stupid thing? Well, after waiting four days, and seeing neither my own post nor any reply in the newsgroup, I figured my article had gone off to somewhere in cyberspace, so I posted again. Only to find my _first_ article and a reply in the newsgroup a couple of hours later, quickly followed by another reply that was actually posted before the first one I received. Yes, our newsfeed is incredibly slow, and I'm going to contact the newsadmin about this, as the situation is getting to be embarrassing. It's not normal for an article to take close to four days to travel from Toronto (the moderator's home base) to Quebec. Anyway, thanks for your tolerance of my mistake, and thanks for the replies too! They were not quite what I was hoping for, but were nevertheless helpful. It's a pity that there is no whois server for Canada, or the "distributed directory service" that John Demco mentionned. What's the latter exactly? Is there such a project in the works?
