        As all Toronto residents with IQs in the triple digits know,
the Toronto Sun sucks.
        The Maclean Hunter-owned Sun is an anti-intellectual,
right-wing-ideology-driven, stupidly written rag tabloid published for
and appealing only to those with IQs in the double digits, or so
reactionary they think Richard Nixon must have been a communist because
he set foot in China. It prints photos of slinky young bimbos every day
on page 3.
        The Sun's sins are too numerous to list but on Saturday,
it really outdid itself, setting a new journalistic standard for
dishonesty, bias and just plain ass-kissing.
        Brian Mulroney, as most everyone knows, is the terminally disgraced
former prime minister who was so loathed that when he finally
left office after eight years the Canadian voters took revenge by
totally trashing his once powerful Conservative Party, reducing it to
two seats in the House of Commons and sending him into internal
exile in some Montreal law firm.
        Recently, evidence has been piling up that Mulroney, not
satisfied with destroying the Canadian industrial base and selling
off the economy to international investors, also availed himself of
a multi-million-dollar bribe from the European Airbus corporation
for facilitating the sale of a number of its airplanes to Air Canada.
        Said evidence features confessions by at least one source
who was a party to the dirty deal, documents uncovered by the CBC and
a couple of numbered and coded Swiss bank accounts, one of which is
said to have been set up as a reposiTORY for Mulroney.
        In all fairness, the evidence is far from conclusive, yet,
and the investigation by the Justice Department and the RCMP
continues. 
        But the game is over, as far as the Toronto Sun is concerned.
        The Sun, which supported Mulroney when he sought the prime
ministership and kissed his ass ardently and often while he was in power,
ran this banner headline Saturday:
        
        MULRONEY BRIBE CLAIM A HOAX

        That certainly promises a fascinating read, n'est-ce pas?
        It is only when one actually reads the story inside the
paper that it becomes clear that the basis of this assertion, the source
of the story, is one Karl Heinz Schreiber, a German.
        This is the same Karl Hans Schreiber who, according to the
evidence which has surfaced previously, was the prime mover of the
Airbus deal; the one who operated a Swiss-registered shell corporation
that purported to act as a "consultant" to the Airbus corporation
in its attempt to unload a number of its planes on Air Canada; the
one who, it has been alleged, arranged for Airbus to pay a half-milllion
dollars *per plane* to several Canadian political figures, including
Mulroney.
        An unimpeachable source, right?
        That didn't faze the Sun, whose compulsion to stand behind
the creep who is arguably the worst - and inarguably the most hated - 
prime minister Canada ever had prompted it to showcase its completely
spurious headline in a thousand newspaper boxes all over Toronto. 
        The trashcan liner's editors knew, as they must, that most people
don't buy the Sun, but may glance at the headline as they drop their coins
into one of its competitors' boxes. No matter. Message delivered as ordered, 
Sir.
        So it is that crooks and knaves stand together, even as
indictments are drawn up and the cops close in.
        One political fixer so crooked he can walk in several different
directions at once, and one so-called newspaper so unethical it tries
to delude its readers for the sake of paying homage to a former
ideological ally.
    Maclean Hunter, are you watching?
