Hiya, I joinedt this newsgroup because I wanted to keep in touch with Canadian news while in England, but it seems like no one ever posts here.. is it because nothing interesting is happening, or because no one bothers to use this newsgroup? Anyhow, I thought perhaps I would start off a discussion and see what happens... maybe no one responds, but maybe someone does and we get a bit of banter going here.. From what I gather, Jean Chretien has stayed off people in the party (mainly Paul Martin) from taking a stab at his leadership.. What does everyone think? Is it time for Chretien to go, or should he stay? I don't know about anyone else, but I think the whole debate about having him go because he is too old is rubbish. There have been many Prime Ministers in the Parliamentary Tradition not only in Canada but also in the UK who have been in office into their 70's, and in Churchill's case, 80's. Chretien seems to be in good health, in control of his facilities, and able to maintain some control over his caucus. So, just because he's over 65, why should he retire? If he were doing a bad job (and I won't pretend to know what kind of a job he has been doing of late, as I haven't been home since September of 1999) it would be differant, but even so, in that case, one would think that their would be a backbench revolt, or, in the next election, he'd be turfed by the voters. Any thoughts, Peter --
