FIVE ARRESTED AT CORPORATE HYPOCRITE PICKET
Toronto Action for Social Change has been working hard since
the election of Mike Harris to draw attention to the problems that the
Harris agenda has caused the people of Ontario. Part of this campaign
has been directed at the corporate supporters of Mike Harris who are
trying to have a positive image in the broader community.
The most blatant corporate hypocrite is Loblaws, a subsidiary
of Weston Industries. Weston Industries gives the maximum allowable
donation to Mike Harris and company while being active participants in
charitable efforts such as Daily Bread's food drives and Second
Harvest efforts to recycle food. Weston's activities that have helped
to cause the growth in hunger in Ontario are ignored. Instead, they
have a reputation of being good corporate citizens for helping to
ameliorate the conditions their political partners are implementing.
This is hypocrisy.
Members and supporters of Toronto Action for Social Change
held a peaceful presence outside of the Loblaws store at Dupont and
Christie at noon on April 11th. Dressed as the Easter Bunny, wearing
rabbit ears or Easter bonnets, TASC members and supporters handed out
Easter Eggs and flyers to people going in and out of Loblaws drawing
attention to the $40 million in deferred taxes Weston owes and cuts to
social services and pointing out the hypocrisy of supporting both food
banks and cuts to welfare and other social services.
Four members of TASC, Brian Burch, Don Johnson, Matthew
Behrens and Will Taylor were charged with trespassing, much to the
surprise of people going in and out of the store. One customer was
also charged with trespassing for objecting to being video-taped by
Loblaws security.
For more information contact Toronto Action for Social Change
at 416-651-5800.
TASC's next action is a protest outside the offices of
Andersen Consulting, 79 Wellington St. West at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday,
May 6th. Andersen is the corporation hired by Mike Harris to oversee
the privatization of social services in Ontario.
