NEWS RELEASE NEWS RELEASE NEWS RELEASE Release 6:00 AM July 12, 1996 CANADIAN FARMERS FOR JUSTICE Box 16, Group 620 SS6, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2C 2Z3 To obtain Dual Marketing for Western Farmers by defending our legal rights. FAMILY FARMER IN CELL WITH 2 MURDERS AND AN ARMED ROBBER FARMERS AND MCMECHAN FAMILY APPEAL TO HEARTS AND COMMON SENSE OF PRAIRIE PEOPLE FROM REGINA ON ALBERT STREET Andy McMechan of Lyleton, Manitoba is in Cell Block 'A', Maximum security of the Brandon Correctional Institute under instructions from Ralph Goodale, Minister of Agriculture. His crime is exporting his own grain, grown on his own farm, without permission of Ottawa's monopoly Canadian Wheat Board. Carol Husband has an organic farm at Wawota Saskatchewan. "Too many criminals in this country are going free while good people are being persecuted by the government. We're here to appeal to the hearts and to the common sense of Canadians". She continues "should a hard working family farmer be incarcerated in a small room with 2 murders and an armed robber? If commerce is a crime in Canada, perhaps all small business people are on the wrong side of the bars!" 53 Minutes Symbolizing 53 Years "The Canadian Wheat Board has been obstructing the flow of commerce in Western Canada for 53 years "says organizer and farmer Norm Colhoun of Lumsden, Saskatchewan. "We apologize for the brief inconvenience but each minute of our press conference here on Albert Street represents one whole year!" "Ralph Goodale has taken over 2 years to review Western Grain Marketing. Ironically had he acted sooner, the so-called crime Andy committed would not be a crime at all. Goodales's Review panel recommended free markets for feed barley and particularly free markets for unusual varieties like Andy had which the CWB had no market for anyway." Colhoun concludes "Andy waited as long as he could before exporting a load with his tractor and wagon. That is why he is being held today." Farmers and the McMechan family humbly appeal to the people of Canada to tell Ralph Goodale to do 2 things: 1. Immediately implement the minor reforms of his own appointed Grain Marketing Panel. 2. Free Andy McMechan. He is not a danger to anyone except maybe to Ralph Goodale's power.
