When is a charity not a charity?

Why is it that an organisation that operates a closed membership, has
a charitable tax number? Isn't that illegal? Burns Bog Conservation
Society vets its members and prevents renewal of some memberships, yet
still goes out soliciting money from the general public.

Generally those memberships that are not allowed to renew are ones
where the individual has had a run in with the organisations president
Eliza Olson.

Can anyone shed any light on the process for getting charitable status
revoked?

Burns Bog project audited

By Dan Ferguson
A federal government auditor is reviewing the management of the
unfinished Burns Bog Society boardwalk project.

Environment Canada manager Mary Beth Berube confirmed that Consulting
and Audit Canada, an independent government agency, has been asked to
examine the Delta-based charity’s handling of a $83,8000
Environment Canada grant to build the 7,000-foot wooden walkway in the
Delta Nature Reserve.

Berube told The Leader that she suspended funding for the project and
ordered the audit because only 1,500 feet of boardwalk was completed
and the third project manager hired by the Burns Bog Society for the
boardwalk in less than a year had resigned.

Bog society president Eliza Olson confirmed the turnover among the
boardwalk project managers.

Olson said she has personally taken charge of the project and plans to
have it completed in the new year, using donations by society
supporters to fund the work.

Olson blamed the boardwalk difficulties on delays getting the funding
promised by Environment Canada.
