$42,000 total estate won't give each son an equal share.

Try 6 sons with $36,000 total, each son getting $6000.

First son gets 1000 +(36000-1000)/7 = 1000 + 35000/7 = 1000+5000 = 6000,
  leaving 30000,
next son gets 2000 +(30000-2000)/7 = 2000 + 28000/7 = 2000+4000 = 6000,
   leaving 24000,
and so on.
